Family photos don't have to be stiff, forced, or stressful. They can be the kids running through a field, your dog photo-bombing every shot, someone making everyone laugh at exactly the wrong moment, and it turns out that's the one you frame.
I work with families across the Twin Cities to capture the real stuff. The inside jokes, the squirmy toddlers, the way your kids look at each other when they think no one is watching. Those are the photos you'll hand down someday.

What to wear — without
the stress.
You don't need to match perfectly. You need to coordinate; there's a difference. Here's how to put together outfits that look intentional without looking like a catalog.
Quick checklist
Avoid large logos, text, and bold graphics
Iron or steam everything beforehand — wrinkles show in photos
Make sure everyone's clothes fit well — too big or too small reads on camera
Coordinate kids' outfits with the adults, not each other
Bring a backup outfit for little ones — accidents happen
Comfortable shoes matter — you may be walking
Text Devon a photo of your outfits a few days before for feedback
Pinterest is a great starting point for family session outfit inspiration
PICK A COLOR PALETTE FIRST
Choose 2–3 colors and dress everyone within that palette. Neutrals plus one accent color is always a safe bet.
MIX TEXTURES, NOT PATTERNS
One pattern per family is plenty. Let everyone else wear solids and textures like linen, denim, and knit, for a cohesive look.
DRESS FOR THE LOCATION
Outdoor sessions call for relaxed, natural fabrics. Studio sessions allow for something a little more polished. Devon can give feedback on your outfits before the session; just text her a photo.

Spring and fall are the most popular times of year as the light is beautiful, and the weather is ideal for outdoor sessions. Summer works well too, especially for lake and beach locations. Winter sessions in Devon's studio are a cozy, beautiful option if outdoor shoots aren't your thing in the cold.

Most family sessions run about an hour. That gives everyone time to settle in, get comfortable, and capture a variety of locations and looks without anyone running out of patience, especially the little ones.

They almost never do, and that's completely fine. Devon is experienced working with kids of all ages and temperaments. Some of the best shots come from the unscripted moments. Don't stress about it going perfectly. It won't, and that's what makes it real.

Absolutely, pets are family. Just make sure your location allows dogs and bring someone to help wrangle them between shots so you can focus on your photos.

Your private online gallery will be delivered within a few weeks of your session. You'll receive a link to view, download, and order prints directly from your preferred print vendor.

We'll keep an eye on the forecast together and make a plan. Light overcast days actually photograph beautifully — soft, even light with no harsh shadows. If conditions are truly unworkable, we'll reschedule at a time that works for everyone.
